Victor Martínez has been a champion from the very beginning. He first stepped onto the NPC stage in 1997, competing at the New York Metro Championships as a light heavyweight, where he placed first.
He continued competing in NPC tournaments until 2001, when he entered his first IFBB tournament, the Night of Champions, where he placed eighth.
Martinez is the second Dominican bodybuilder to turn professional. The first being Tony Domenench in 1995.
The following year, in 2002, he competed in his first Arnold Classic and first Ironman Pro Invitational. By 2004 it was time for Mr. Olympia. From 2004 to 2007 he climbed the ranks, eventually placing second.
In 2007, Martínez took first at the Arnold Classic.
In January 2008, Martínez underwent surgery to repair his left patellar tendon which ruptured while he was performing warm-up lunges. After almost a year away from training and competition Martínez came back taking second place in the 2009 Arnold Classic and went on to place first in the 2011 Arnold Classic Madrid
