Shawn Rhoden on the Olympia Hotseat

The normally reserved Rhoden, who prefers to let his physique do the talking onstage, was feeling a bit bothered concerning some post-Olympia comments made by reigning and two-time champ Phil Heath. Here’s what Flexatron had to say about that

WAKE-UP CALL

“You have no idea where you are as an IFBB pro until you stand on the Olympia stage with the best in the business. That alone will take you through every workout and every meal of your diet for the next year. You’ll work your butt of twice as hard because fi nally you know what it feels like to be up there and what it will take to reach the next level.”

THE LIVING LEGEND

“When Ronnie approached me after last year’s Europa Supershow and asked me to be a Ronnie Coleman Signature Series athlete, it was like Michael Jordan picking me to be on his team. I will spend time with him leading into the O. We’re gonna train at the original Metroflex in Arlington, TX where he trained to win all eight of his Sandows. What a wealth of knowledge at my disposal. You can bet I’ll be shouting, ‘Light weight, baby!’ and ‘Ain’t nothin’ but a peanut!’ ”

NOTHING TO CHANCE

“Last year, Charles Glass and Dexter Jackson told me that my window of opportunity in this sport is very small, so I’m doing everything I can to take advantage of it. I’ve left my family and friends back home so I can train with Charles at Gold’s. I stay 2½ miles from the gym, and my friend [NPC competitor] Brad Rowe has a company called Pro-Fit Food, and is doing all my meals. Every day I wake up, everything I do is with one thing in mind: the 2013 Olympia.”

“X”TRA MOTIVATION

“At the 2011 Europa Supershow [where Rhoden placed third], we were walking of stage and Toney Freeman said to me, ‘Gotta bring it, son!’ I thought to myself, ‘Are you kidding me?’ So I told Chris [Aceto] last year, ‘I don’t care who else beats me, but Toney Freeman is not going to beat me! If I do 20 shows, I will not lose any of them to Toney!’ That was my motivation all year. After I beat him at the Tampa Pro, I had a bowl of oatmeal and a protein shake. I went to bed and was on the treadmill at 2 a.m. There was no way he was going to beat me the following week at the Europa Supershow, because I was going to be even better. That’s just from those four words Toney said so can you imagine what I’m going to bring to the O?"
