Several large-scale studies have shown that coffee consumption reduces the risk of type-2 diabetes, and one of the mechanisms proposed for this benefit is that higher levels of caffeine consumption are associated with lower weight gain.

Recent articles indicate that chlorogenic acid (found in green coffee bean extract) and its metabolite, caffeic acid, help inhibit activity of the enzyme that breaks down starch into sugars and sugar absorption from starch, thus decreasing caloric input. Clinical research has shown that chlorogenic acid helps limit after-meal glucose surges, supporting healthy blood sugar levels.

Green coffee beans are simply coffee beans that have not yet been roasted. Green coffee extract seems to reduce the absorption of different types of sugar from the gastrointestinal tract. Additionally, the green coffee extract also demonstrates strong antioxidant activity.

The most positive study to date is that when overweight individuals took green coffee beans, there was a significant reduction in body weight and percent body fat.

In summary, there is good news that green coffee bean extract can intervene in a unique way to inhibit the process behind obesity. Its compounds can reduce levels of fat and glucose in the body—and can decrease the absorption of calories!
