This herb boosts testosterone levels, thanks to its high content of furostanolic saponins. These phytochemicals work in the body to increase the release of luteinizing hormone from the pituitary gland, which influences the testicles to increase testosterone production. Research also shows that men taking fenugreek for eight weeks doubled their strength gains compared with those taking a placebo.
Otherwise known as tongkat ali or longjack, this herb has traditionally been used in Malaysia to increase sexual prowess and virility in men. Early studies using rats and mice found that Eurycoma increased sexual activity and testosterone in males. New research in humans shows it significantly boosts testosterone and decreases cortisol levels, particularly during exercise.
STINGING NETTLE LEAF
This type of nettle grows mainly in North America and is known scientifically as Urtica dioica. It boosts T levels by keeping the testosterone molecule free from a carrier protein known as sex hormone–binding globulin (SHBG) that prevents it from binding with androgen receptors in the muscle cells. Higher concentrations of free testosterone allow the hormone to bind to the androgen receptors in muscles and instigate more growth.
SAW PALMETTO BERRY EXTRACT
This small palm plant is known formally as Serenoa repens and is common to the southeastern United States. Saw palmetto berry extract is rich in fatty acids and phytosterols that provide the majority of its benefits. It works by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which normally converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). By inhibiting the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme, saw palmetto reduces the amount of testosterone that is converted into DHT, thus keeping testosterone levels up, as well as its muscle-building effects.
This is actually an extract from a fungus that grows on some insects, such as caterpillars and ants. It maintains levels of hormones like testosterone, increases the body’s resistance to stress, improves cholesterol levels, regulates insulin release, and boosts energy and mental focus. To boost testosterone levels, cordyceps binds to specific receptors on the testicles to increase testosterone production similar to the way that luteinizing hormone does.
